Vetiver grass?
NO? well, then you ain't heard nothing yet!
by Charl Pienaar
Let me introduce you to Vetiver, a unique grass species with the princely
formal name of Vetiveria zizanioides L., which could be utilized for various
special on- and off farm applications.
Talk about pedigree: Vetiver is being promoted by the World Bank for soil
and water conservation in agricultural lands since 1980's.Vetiver grass
forms a simple, effective, natural, vegetative physical barrier (a hedge)
consisting of upright, rigid, dense and deeply rooted clump grass.
Vetiver is used in many fields including agriculture, bio-engineering, water
related applications, bio-remediation, disaster mitigation and various other
uses (handicrafts, purfumes, medicinal purposes, papermaking, bio-fuel,
reinforcing bricks and natural pesticide.
Okay, now the pessimists are asking: what is the downside? This being an
alien plant, won't it invade and become a weed?
Vetiver is propagated and established vegetative through the breaking of
a clump into numerous new small plants. The recommended variety of
Vetiver is sterile (non-fertile) and cannot produce viable seed, as is
proven by DNA tests.
