Die projekbestuurder, Engela Wessels van
Bloemfontein, wil haar eiendom in Piet
Retiefstraat, Edenburg, aanwend as
fasiliteringsentrum vanwaar die opleidingsaspek
van die projek gefasiliteer word. Die huis sal
bekend staan as
Shalomhuis

Engela Wessels en Dora du Plessis by Shalomhuis
begin.

buitebande geplant. Hierdie was Shalomhuis se
bydrae tot Planting Season wat op 22 Maart
plaasgevind het. Die doel is ook
dat Herman hierdie idee van lasagna-
groentetuine aan sy gemeenskap sal oordra.

In our gardens

On 03 September 2008 we were blessed by the presence of the
"wormaholic" Charl Pienaar who introduced these wriggling chaps to us.
He sponsored us with earthworms, and soon we were producing our
own Vermicompost. This means our soils are conditioned by this type
of compost which will allow us to produce 100% Organic Veggies. In
other words we are now not only have a garden but also do
"Earthworm farming", now how interesting is that? Be prepared to be
wowed by this project as there is more to come!

Projek Shalom
A huge breakthrough have been made
recently when Checkers and Freshmark
donated a earthworm farming facility worth
R 300 000 (contains 120 earthworm bins) to
the Cape Institute of Agricultural Training
(KILO) at Elsenburg campus. This initiative
will work towards the aim of training
students in more environmental friendly
practices.
Five medical students in their third
year (Lizeri Combrinck, Caileigh Deere,
Leoni de Man, Gert Steyn and Marli
van Rensburg) were involved in a
food garden project at Free State
Care in Action in Bloemfontein.

The two vegetable garden projects at
MUCPP have been used as pilot programmes
for the making of vermicompost that have
lead to job creation and an income for the
gardeners. The worms breed and multiply
very actively and are used for starting new
vermicompost projects. The tea made from
the vermicompost also chases away the
"bad" bugs and encourage the "good" bugs
to stay in the garden.
How do you combine eco-friendly with
business ideas that can be implemented by
the poor? More and more of Hand in Hand's
women are now turning to a simple yet
functional innovation. The vermicompost
enterprises requires a loan of 25,000 INR
(600 USD), ten cows and five women, yet
produce rich manure that can be used for
organic farming while at the same time they
increase the monthly income of poor agrarian
households.
In June 2002 a group of maximum security
prisoners attended a HIV/AIDS prevention
program at the Brandvlei Maximum Institution.
They were so inspired with what they learned
from the program that they decided to reach
out to the surrounding community. The inmates
called themselves "Group of Hope" and they
decided to "adopt" HIV/AIDS orphans and
people in need from the community who will
come and visit the Group of Hope members.
During the visits the group usually spoils the
"adopted" people with snacks, vegetables and
clothes that they have made themselves in the
workshop and toys that were received as
donations.
